How to increase your chances...
We've put together a few notes to help you when applying for a job, project or assignment we’ve advertised.
Please do have a read through to get a good idea of what we love to receive from you, and what will drive
us slightly barmy.
1. Read the advert or description thoroughly.
2. Read it again!
3. Use the relevant reference code.
Your application may be fabulously written, with great style and wit, containing the best samples known to humanity, but if it doesn’t have the right reference in the subject line, it may not get to where it needs to be. The person reading it may assume it’s for another role and deem it unsuitable, or your email may languish in the wrong email folder and not be considered for the role you want.
4. Only get in touch if you have the relevant experience.
If we say we need a specialist in a certain area, then that’s who we need. We’d love to give people a chance to break into new areas, but our clients usually need to see directly relevant experience as they’re working to tight deadlines. So please, no more emails with: ‘I don’t actually have [insert topic here] experience, but I’m a great writer and can write about anything’. We know most of you are highly adaptable, fabulously multi-skilled types, but needs must when we’re making a selection.
5. Don’t email us to moan about the fact that the role’s not telecommutable.
Some of our roles and assignments can be home-based, others can’t. We advise our clients towards remote working wherever possible (we agree it’s the best way to work), but in some cases the work is on-site. Receiving 50 emails from otherwise suitable people who can’t work on-site doesn’t change things unfortunately.
6. If we say ‘brief’ we mean ‘brief’.
If we’ve asked for a brief overview of your relevant experience, we’re looking for a few short paragraphs and not a full screen’s worth, so no need to spend a lot of time crafting an essay. Bullet points detailing the most salient info are always welcome, and a bit easier on the eyes.
7. Check your spelling and grammar.
We resource editorial professionals. Yes, yes, you already know that, but there’s a clue there: we look for people who are editorially-skilled and professional. Remember, your CV is a communication tool and as such, needs to follow the usual grammatical rules. Most common mistake? Erroneous capital letters! This of course doesn’t mean devoid of personality - we’re happy to receive creatively-written application emails (nothing wrong with making us laugh if the mood takes you). What we don’t like to see are emails or CVs full of spelling, grammatical or formatting errors.
8. Please don't say ‘negotiable’.
Nearly everyone is ‘negotiable’ on rate or salary. If we ask for applicants to state their salary or rate expectations, please do. If you’re the right person and you’re too high, we’ll ask if you’re happy to be flexible. If you quote too low, we’ll let you know if we’re offering more (yes we really do that when appropriate).
9. We nearly always use UK-based content professionals.
Why? Because that’s where most of our clients are, and there are plenty of great UK writers, editors, journalists etc so we don’t need to look elsewhere. So we’ll often specify ‘UK-based applicants only’. We’re always happy for experienced editorial professionals to email us on spec, however emailing from India, the US or elsewhere will likely be met with something along the lines of the title of this paragraph, unless you’re about to move to the UK. We like to support the UK industry and its professionals.
10. No phone calls please.
We have so many fabulous editorial and content professionals get in touch that the phones would be totally swamped if everyone called us – and we’d never get anything else done! Even if you’ve already sent your application via email, we don’t need a follow up phone call. If we need further info, we’ll email you or give you a call, promise.
11. No need to check on the progress of your application.
We’ll be in touch as soon as there’s news, so there’s no need to chase us for details. Sometimes our clients are slow with giving feedback, other times an urgent project may have come up so they’ve had to drop everything else for a week. Whatever the reason, we’ll always let you know as soon as we have something to tell you – whether it’s good news or bad.
